If you were Jewish in Judea just a bit over 2000 years ago, you were forbidden to study your religion.  The Greek ruler Antiochus thought everyone should worship Greek gods and ordered his guards to enforce this upon the Jews.  However, the Jews continued to study their sacred books and practice their faith, and sometimes they would spy a guard coming as they did so.  Then they would be forced to hide their books, and would sometimes pull out their dreydle and pretend to be involved in a friendly game.

What is the dreydle, you ask?  The dreydle is a spinning top with four sides that is used to play gambling games.  Each side is marked with a Hebrew letter, each with different meanings. You spin the top and follow the directions.  Today children often use chocolate Hanukkah 'gelt' to gamble with.  This game is so popular it even has a song written about it!  What song, you ask?  Why, the Dreydle Song, of course!  Listen to it now!
