Rama was a noble prince in the kingdom of Ayodhya, happily married to the lovely princess Sita.  At the instigation of his stepmother Kaikeyi, Rama was sent to the forest in exile for fourteen years.  Obeying this decree, Rama, Sita, and his younger brother Lakshmana set out for the forest.  There they settled into a simple life together.

One day the indulgent King Ravana, learning of their whereabouts and seeking revenge for an earlier conflict, appeared at their hut disguised as an ascetic.  Tricking the innocent Sita, Ravana swept her up in to his flying chariot, carrying her off to his island Kingdom of Lanka.  In the meantime Rama, enlisting the aid of the brave monkey army, went in search of his beloved Sita.

As they reached Lanka, a fierce and bloody battle ensued in which Rama eventually killed Ravana.  Having completed their fourteen years of exile, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana returned victorious to the capital of Ayodhya.  The entire city rejoiced with festivities by the lighting of thousands of lamps as Ram was coronated king.
