The humble but extraordinary tale of the birth of Jesus Christ has itself given birth to many beautiful, sacred Christmas songs. Silent Night gracefully evokes the serenity that must have surrounded the baby Jesus' manger crib. Go Tell It on the Mountain professes the jublilance that the people felt, and still do, that such a being of light had entered the world. We Three Kings is a more solemn and reverent approach to this same joy, and recalls the travails of the Magi who came to visit the newborn Jesus with sacred offerings. O Holy Night sets the scene of a world in darkness ready for a glorious miracle, an announcement first made to shepherds in the night by the light and holy presence of a host of angels.
The Christmas tree originated in Germany, a merging of the Paradise Tree (a tree set up in a house to commemorate Adam and Eve Feast Day, December 24th) and a decorative wooden pyramid adorned with figurines, candles, evergreens and a star. O Tannenbaum/O Christmas tree, also German in origin, captures the spirit of this symbol that has come to represent all the ideas of Christmas, from the sacred star of Bethlehem at the top to the gifts at the bottom, some of which are brought by Santa Claus, harbinger of gifts, faith, and hope, to Christian and secular children all over the world. Santa Claus is Coming to Town is a light-hearted reminder to these boys and girls to be on their best behavior, lest Santa skip their houses on his Christmas Eve gift giving flight around the world. |
